College Web LD
“I WAS IMPRESSED WITH HOW THOROUGH DEVELOPERTOWN WAS IN LEARNING ABOUT MY BUSINESS. THEY TOOK THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND THE NEED FOR MY PRODUCT IN THE MARKETPLACE AND HAD INNOVATIVE IDEAS FOR IMPROVING THE PRODUCT TO MEET AN EVEN GREATER NEED.”
- Judy Bass, Founder and CEO of College Web LD
7-10% of the student population has a learning difference and among them, only 34% graduate from college. Despite the clear need, there are no college-specific planning tools for students with learning differences, and private consultants often charge a premium for their services. Many students with learning differences end up failing out of college within the first year because they didn’t choose a college that was right for their specific needs.
In 2001, Judy Bass founded Bass Educational Services, LLC—an educational consulting firm that works exclusively with students that have learning differences. As a private consultant, she sought to find colleges that fit her clients needs. Because of the lack of information available in college literature, and on college websites, Judy had to visit schools directly to gather this information. As Judy’s college visits began numbering in the hundreds, her husband Joe reasoned that the valuable information she was collecting should be available and affordable to more people than just her clients. And so, CollegeWebLD was born with the purpose of improving the lives of students with learning differences by assisting them in finding a college where they can be happy and successful.
Judy came to DeveloperTown and started with a design session. Turning a one-on-one consulting business into a tiered service is not easy, but we worked to design something affordable and accessible to students all over the country. Judy had a raw database-style website, and we helped her turn it into a three-tiered walkthrough system with a killer user experience. The client or student using the site is prompted and guided through to make the process seamless and easy. They have access to some information in the free version of the product and get more access to valuable information if they decide to purchase other packages.
When Judy left our design session with a clear vision in hand, she worked to raise money to build her web application. After a few months of gathering investors, Judy came back to DeveloperTown so we could build her app. We worked to create a usable beta version of the project and are looking forward to adding more amazing features in the future.
Currently, CollegeWebLD is in beta. Clients love receiving detailed information describing the services available to students with learning differences, including contact information for disability services, documentation needed, and level of support provided. What started as a small project to build a personal database has grown into an invaluable resource for anyone searching for colleges for students who learn differently.
